Report on the Activities of the Continuing Education Center of the Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine for the Academic Year 2021-2022
International Implantology Program (MIU IIP)
International Implantology Program Batch #5 (2021/2023) started 11th of March 2021. The 25 candidates enrolled in the program are from different universities such as Ain-Shams University, Future University in Egypt, and Pharos University in Alexandria.
The IIP aims to familiarize the candidates with the required knowledge in the field of Oral Implantology from basic to advanced treatment modalities. It also aims to teach the students how they can design and perform treatment plans for implant placement cases in partially edentulous sites. The program also demonstrates how to plan and execute the restorative phase after the implants are functional. The candidates are taught how to manage complications from dental implant placements. The program director is Dr. Ahmed Aboul Fetouh from the Oral Medicine and Periodontology Department at MIU. He holds a Diplomat from the American Board of Periodontology, Master of Science in Periodontics-from Tufts University – Boston, MA, USA. Prof. Daniel Buser, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Oral Surgery and Stomatology, University of Bern, Switzerland is one of the visiting instructors for the program in addition to Prof. Tarek Salah, Fixed Prosthodontics Division, Restorative Department and the Vice Dean for Post-Graduate Studies and Research.
LASER Therapy in Dentistry – Mastership Program
LASER Therapy in Dentistry – Mastership Program (Batch 7) included 10 students who were enrolled in March 2022 and graduated in December 2022. They presented their clinical cases in Aachen, Germany. Candidates enrolled in the program are from different universities such as Ain-Shams University, British University in Egypt and Al-Azhar University. The Laser Center prepares distinguished researchers and professionals who can compete nationally and regionally in the field of Laser sciences and applications in Dentistry. The candidates should be able to conduct relevant basic and applied research to develop and serve the community. The program director is Asst. Prof. Youssef Sedky – MSc, Laser Therapy in Dentistry, RWTH Aachen University, Germany. He is a Lecturer at the Orthodontic Department, Faculty of Oral & Dental Medicine, Misr International University. The visiting instructors for the program are Dr. Dimitris Strakas, Scientific Director of Aachen Dental Laser Center– MSc, PhD, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and Asst. Prof. Rene Franzen, Associate Professor of Biophysics & Laser Technology, RWTH Aachen University, Germany.
Clinical Attachment Program Report
The course started on August 14, 2022, and ended on September 22, 2022. It aimed to develop the clinical, practical and cognitive capabilities of trainees (whether graduates or current interns). The course included 2 programs which are the Comprehensive Clinical Program and Microendodontics Clinical Program. 18 candidates participated in the course, including five trainees who are graduates of other universities such as British University in Egypt, Jazan University and Qassim University in Saudi Arabia.
The comprehensive program is a multidisciplinary clinical program designed to enhance candidates’ ability to manage comprehensive cases which represent the majority of the daily clinical workflow in most of the dental offices. The program tackles full rehabilitation cases including endodontic treatment, fixed prosthodontics, and restorative treatment. Microendodontics program is designed to enhance the candidates’ ability to manage challenging complex endodontic cases and improve their skills in advanced endodontic mishaps. The program director is Prof. Ahmed Fawzy, Operative Division, Restorative Department.
The program includes lectures, hands-on workshops, live demos on patients and clinical work on patients aiming to expose participants to a wide variety of advanced cases. 90% of the program is based purely on clinical work. It covers diagnosis, treatment planning, Cone Beam Computed Tomography “CBCT” interpretation, advanced molar endodontics, management of endodontic mishaps and open apices under magnification. The program director is Prof. Ahmed Ghobashy, Head of Endodontics Department.
