Master of Arts in Comparative Media Studies

Overview

The Master of Arts in Comparative Media Studies is designed to respond to the rapid changes in local and international media industries, since advances in communication technology have eliminated borders between areas of specializations in Mass Communication. Modern studies in the field encompass more than one specialization in Mass Communication, including traditional and new media. The Comparative Media Studies Program examines these new trends in the media industry through focusing on media convergence, constitutions of media conglomerates and media ownership.


Objectives of the Comparative Media Studies MA Program

1. To prepare specialists capable of developing innovative research in comparative media
   that would cope with the fast developments in the media industry and communication
   technology.
2. To provide media professionals with the knowledge and skills to develop local, regional and
   international media industry.

Admission Requirements:

1. Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from an accredited Egyptian University or an equivalent degree accredited by the Supreme Council of Universities, with a minimum grade “Good” or a minimum GPA (2.5) from universities that apply the credit hour system.
2. Applicants who hold a two-year diploma in any of the specializations of Mass Communication with a minimum grade “Good” may be admitted to the Program upon the recommendation of the Department of Mass Communication Council and the Faculty of Al-Alsun and Mass Communication Council.
3. Applicants who need to support their degree may be asked to complete certain courses from the undergraduate pre-requisite courses. In this case, the acceptance of the student in the master’s program is tied to completing these courses, which will not be considered among the requirements of the master’s degree.
4. Submit a valid TOEFL ITP (administered by Amideast) with a minimum score of 550. If you do not have your TOEFL score ready, you may submit it to the Office of Graduate Admissions before payment of tuition fees.
5. Pass a written test and an oral interview

Application Process

1. All applicants are required to apply online via the MIU website. You must complete
   all required fields including selecting a date for the written and oral tests.
2. Applicants are required to bring all the required original documents in hard copy on the test date.
3. After receiving notification of acceptance to the Program, applicants meet their academic advisors for course selection and payment of the tuition fees.

Program Structure

The students are required to successfully complete (33 credit hours) distributed as follows:

Program Duration

The program duration is at least two calendar years (24 months) or four semesters. The duration of the program shouldn’t exceed five years for both the course work and the thesis. The load for each semester is a maximum of 9 credit hours. Classes run in the afternoon on weekdays including Saturday.


Language of Instruction

English is the language of instruction. However, some courses may be taught in Arabic, as per the suggestion of the Department Council and the approval of the Faculty Council. The thesis must be submitted in English.

First: Two courses in General Mass Communication Science (6 Credit Hours)

Second: Three courses in Comparative Media Studies (9 Credit Hours)

Third: Elective Courses (9 Credit Hours)

Fourth: Courses for the Thesis (9 Credit Hours)

Master of Arts in Translation and New Technology

Overview

The Master of Arts in Translation and New Technology is an interdisciplinary program designed to respond to the advances in computer technology which have revolutionized translation studies and practice.  The program will produce specialists in translation and interpreting who are up-to-date with the latest technologies and applications including translation memories, machine translation, computer-aided translation (CAT) tools, and collaborative translation management systems.  The program is delivered through a combination of lectures, interactive seminars and hands-on training with a wide range of translation tools and technology.


Objectives

1. To promote interdisciplinary research in the field of translation technology.
2. To provide students with the technological tools and skills required in the translation profession.
3. To prepare specialists capable of developing translation applications and programs.

Admission Requirements:

1. Hold a Bachelor’s degree in English from an accredited Egyptian University or an equivalent degree accredited by the Supreme Council of Universities, with a minimum grade “Good” or a minimum GPA (2.5) from universities that apply the credit hour system.
2. Submit a valid TOEFL ITP (administered by AMIDEAST) with a minimum score of 550 or a valid IELTS Academic with a minimum score of 6. In case the test score is not ready, it may be submitted it to the Office of Graduate Admissions before payment of tuition fees.
3. Pass a test including Arabic, translation and computer skills.

Program Duration

The program duration is two and a half years including 3 semesters of course work and 1 calendar year for thesis preparation.  The maximum time to complete the program is three and a half years for both the course work and the thesis.  The credit hour load for each semester is a maximum of 18 credit hours. Classes run in the afternoon on weekdays including Saturday.
