First TVJ graduating class excels in graduation arbitration
The first Television Journalism graduating class impressed external arbitrators BBC Cairo Bureau Editor Safaa Faisal and Reuters Editor Nadia El-Gowely during their online graduation arbitration on Thursday July 9, 2020.
The Television Journalism arbitration consisted of two student groups under the supervision of Television Journalism Program coordinator Dr. Nadia Abdel Rahman and Assistant Professor of Mass Communication Dr. Sarah Shawky.
The two groups created extensive projects on the topics of Medical Tourism and Animal Rights in Egypt respectively. The projects consisted of an array of productions to showcase their journalistic abilities.
“I really, really admired your hard work,” said El-Gowely. “I am impressed. I loved what I listened to and what I watched. Beautiful.”
Students produced various types of production, including video features, podcast series and a variety of news and feature articles.
“Your career in journalism is undoubted,” said El-Gowely to one of the groups. “You are excellent, excellent, excellent. What I especially admire is your mastering of your medium and the English language.”
Students were also tasked with designing a professional news website to showcase all their work.
“The website is splendid,” said El-Gowely to the students. “It is professional work, not the work of graduating students. This is the start of a success story. This is something that could ‘explode’ and ‘echo,’ as people say.”
“Absolutely,” agreed Faisal. “I could put that on (BBC) Live.”
The students also covered all their news on all the top social media including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. Students created campaigns to increase engagement.
“I can’t express how impressed I am that you created a competition for people,” said Faisal to the Medical Tourism group regarding their social media campaign. “Wow, this is engagement using the latest techniques. The strategy was excellent.”
These students will be the first students to graduate from the Television Journalism Program with a Bachelor degree in Mass Communication. The program replaced in 2016 the Electronic and Print Journalism program.
